Popeye first appeared in the 1929 daily comic strip, Thimble Theater, and quickly became a sensation. The pipe-puffing sailor caught the attention of animator Max Fleischer in 1933, and he made his screen debut in a 1933 Betty Boop short. From there, Popeye became an enduring star in his own right.
