The first Disney film produced for the IMAX format, THE YOUNG BLACK STALLION is the prequel to the beloved family film THE BLACK STALLION. Like many films produced for the IMAX's huge screen, this film is filled with sweeping landscapes and stunning vistas that were shot on location in the African nation of Namibia. Separated from her family in Arabia during the upheavals of WWII, young Neera discovers a black horse in the wilderness and befriends it. With the horse's help, she finds her way back to her family, only to discover that they are on the brink of ruin. In order to save her family, Neera must ride the stallion in dangerous race against the horses and men of her father's enemies. THE YOUNG BLACK STALLION was directed by Simon Wincer, who also directed the family-friendly FREE WILLY. Everyone's favorite cement mixer stars in this selection of episodes of BOB THE BUILDER, an award-winning children's show that focuses on resourcefulness and helpfulness, teaching children the value of friendship and imparting a do-it-yourself, positive attitude. When Farmer Pickles needs his barn whitewashed in Scarecrow Dizzy, Dizzy's up for the job, but wait--isn't the barn supposed to be white, not pink? Then, in the previously unseen Bob the Photographer, Bob's plans to enter a photography contest are foiled when his camera goes missing. Turns out Spud's been using the camera to take his own photographs, and the winner of the contest will surprise everyone! Dizzy and Muck learn lots of new things helping Mrs. Potts erect statues around town and putting bollards around the Town Hall in Dizzy's Statues. When the statues and the bollards get mixed up, however, its up to Bob to fix the situation! SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON is a refreshingly old-fashioned and gentle tale of a mustang stallion struggling to remain free in the old West. The film is a seamless blend of traditional hand-drawn and computer-generated animation. Opening with an impressive bird's eye pan of the Grand Canyon, from the viewpoint of an eagle, SPIRIT captures the unspoiled beauty of the land. The animals in this particular animated film do not talk, and Matt Damon provides effective, sparse narration from the perspective of Spirit, an adventurous young stallion who is captured by the U.S. Army. But Spirit will not let the soldiers saddle and ride him. An authoritarian colonel (voiced by James Cromwell) is determined to break Spirit, at one point starving the horse to weaken him. A Lakota prisoner, Little Creek (voiced by Daniel Studi) is impressed with the horse, and helps him to escape. Little Creek can't break the horse either. But the two learn to respect each other, and Spirit meets Rain, Little Creek's horse, and falls in love. The score was written by Hans Zimmer, and Bryan Adams wrote and performed the sweet, simple songs on the soundtrack. Disney's ninth animated feature includes two stories: Mickey and the Beanstalk, in which the famed mouse and his friends get caught up in a version of the popular fairy tale, which is interspersed with live-action clips of Edgar Bergen and his dummy pals Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd; and Bongo the Bear, a tale of a lovesick bear, accompanied by the dulcet tones of Miss Dinah Shore.
